A Day in the Life

You will be a key member of Medtronic’s center-led supply management team responsible for managing and influencing $300M in annual spend for RD-Engineering Software / Services, Business Process Outsourcing (BPO), and IT Outsourcing (ITO) Services. You will work with New Product Innovation and Product teams to leverage pan-Medtronic procurement strategies in alignment with individual Business Unit’s goals. This role also supports the BPO ITO sourcing and contracting process across a broad spectrum of functions by building and validating the financial business case and negotiating with suppliers. The position will report to the Indirect Supply Management (ISM) leader for this category and will work in tandem with them to optimize indirect services in terms of product quality, sustainable cost improvements, and risk mitigation. Strong business acumen is a must as you will be called upon to choose the right supplier, chose the right type of engagement model, and put in place contracts that will protect Medtronic’s interests.


•Build strategic relationships with internal stakeholders and suppliers

•Engage and influence multiple business group and site-level stakeholders to adopt and implement strategies developed by the category team; Medtronic is a highly matrixed organization and having the ability to influence and leverage the matrix is a key requirement

•Achieve (year-on-year) value improvements for all aspects of quality, service, and cost

•Develop and implement sourcing strategies that result in a sustainable competitive advantage

•Perform RF(x) events to drive competitive pressure and ensure maximum value is realized

•Lead contract negotiations

•Interact and partner with Legal, business, and other key stakeholder groups

•Provide stakeholders with a balanced view of contract risk and liabilities

•Assist in Supplier Stratification activities and develop capability roadmaps

•Gather Market Intelligence and trends for relevant categories and associated sub-categories

•Create and establish internal and external benchmark analysis, including gap analysis, and required actions to achieve functional advantage

•Identify insourcing and outsourcing opportunities

•Recommend solutions to business problems and/or identify opportunities for improvement, and present ideas to leadership

•Drive process and system improvements to enhance purchasing efficiency, cost, and compliance

•Follow governance processes and Purchasing Controls systems to ensure compliance

•Educate and train business group personnel on key indirect supply management initiatives and policies e.g., Professional Services policy, Procure-to-Pay technology rollout

•Establish and support a work environment of continuous improvement.

The above tasks and responsibilities are deemed as essential to this position; however, business conditions may change so flexibility is required.

Must Have: Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelors degree required

  • Minimum of 4 years of relevant experience in supplier management, strategic sourcing, or new product development (NPD)in a manufacturing organization, or advanced degree with a minimum of 2 years relevant experience in supplier management, strategic sourcing, or new product development (NPD) in a manufacturing organization.

Nice to Have

•Prior experience working in Research and Development roles or supporting this Category.

•Prior experience with data, and data visualization software (e.g., Tableau, Power BI)

•Master’s Degree in engineering or business

•Previous experience in the medical device / life sciences industry

•Knowledge of FDA regulated industries

•Prior experience managing Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) engagements

•Ability to partner with and influence internal technical experts

•Demonstrated leadership, customer service, problem solving, communication, negotiation, tact, judgment, and organizational skills

•Influencing and leading RD teams and external suppliers to deliver results

•Excellent written and verbal communication with strong program management skills

•Strong business and legal acumen

•Positive and energetic team player with strong cross-functional team experience

•Ability to work independently with minimal supervision

•Strong Problem-Solving skills

•Strong analytical skills

•Highly proficient in MS Excel and MS PowerPoint
