The marketing specialist works with the chief marketing officer, corporate business development staff, business support staff, and business unit staff (engineers and scientists) to develop and execute programs and complete initiatives that are the responsibility of the corporate business development group. Marketing specialists provide redundancy in capabilities and capacity of the corporate business development group and support each other on a day-to-day basis.

The primary responsibility of the marketing specialist is to support client-specific and market sector teams with developing and implementing strategies for winning new clients and expanding and enhancing our relationships with existing clients. The marketing specialist works with the business development team to promote and coordinate marketing programs as well as corporate business development’s events team to support conferences, trade shows, and client events.

Responsibilities and Typical Activities:

  • Provide market strategy support for business unit teams seeking assistance in client development strategy.

  • Maintain an understanding of key market segments to identify growth opportunities with existing clients and supporting marketing and business development efforts for key clients.

  • Maintain an understanding of the consulting market to help differentiate from competitors.

  • Support market sector assessments, including conducting market research and business analysis to identify opportunities that may fit Barr’s business model and services.

  • Support and facilitate strategic pursuit efforts to help consultant teams identify opportunities, strategically position for these opportunities, and track execution of these strategies.

  • Lead or participate in strategic planning for client development and track progress toward goals, including client contacts, revenue, profitability, and effectiveness.

  • Serve as a marketing and business development specialty resource for client specific and market sector teams for development and implementation of marketing and client relationship strategy.

  • Assess marketing and client relationship needs, provide recommendations, and support implementation to meet these needs.

  • Provide support for establishing and managing corporate business development program budgets.

  • Provide leadership in development of standards, guidelines, templates, systems, and resources for executing and tracking marketing strategies and activities.

  • Develop, implement, and train others in best practices for marketing and client development.

  • Assist with goal setting, execution, and progress tracking for corporate business development plans, programs, and initiatives.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in marketing, business, or related fields

  • 5+ years of experience in a direct marketing position, preferably with a consulting or professional services firm

  • Experience in leading cross-functional teams and coordinating promotional efforts

  • Experience and proven capabilities influencing without authority and selling ideas to various professional stakeholders

  • Experience developing and implementing digital marketing and social media strategies

  • Superior analytical skills

  • Strong skills with Microsoft Office programs, especially with the calendar and scheduling aspects of Outlook

  • Ability to work with partial information, identify data needed to complete tasks, and help individuals draft and collect information needed to prepare final work products

  • Capacity to thrive in a fast-paced environment

  • Exceptional organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple tasks

  • Strong oral and written communication skills as well as strong listening skills

  • Demonstrated attention to detail and follow-through

  • A desire to help project teams be successful

  • Ability to take initiative and emphasis on client service

  • Ability to work effectively with a variety of personalities and build working relationships

  • Flexible working style and willingness to occasionally modify personal schedule to help meet project deadlines

Preferred Qualifications

  • MBA in marketing

  • Proven experience in strategic planning, resource allocation, leadership, influencing without authority, and people management

  • Experience in consulting or professional services industry (ideally architectural and engineering services)

  • Experience preparing visual presentation materials

  • Prior work with Deltek Vision

  • Experience in the mining, energy, public, or manufacturing industries


The anticipated base salary range for this position is $67,000 - $80,000/year. Compensation will vary based upon experience, education, skill level, and other compensable factors. Employees in this position may also be eligible for a discretionary cash bonus. Our compensation comes in more ways than traditional base salary, and we believe that when all those elements are combined, our compensation is a competitive part of the total value proposition of working at Barr.
