The EMPI/Data Integrity Specialist is responsible for performing

essential duties necessary to maintain the integrity of demographic information

within the source systems populating the Enterprise Master Person Index

database (EMPI), as well as the downstream electronic health record systems -

according to established standards, procedures and guidelines. Further, engage in the extended

organizational scope of quality monitoring as well as departmental training

development and implementation.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Daily evaluation of extensive Overlays, and related Linkages, utilizing EMPI software in assigned market source systems

  • Research and perform the EMPI demographic maintenance required to validate patient identity utilizing established EMPI guidelines as well as personal discretion and judgment;

  • Resolve any linkage related tasks across facilities within EMPI database tool according to established procedures and guidelines when identified as part of the extensive Overlay, or Linkage processes;

  • Network as necessary with outside resources, such as insurance websites, market physician office staff, etc. to determine veracity of patient demographic data;

  • Notify all downstream systems/departments and supplemental software support staff of medical record number (MRN) changes because of merges in a timely manner according to established procedures and guidelines;

  • Partner with Source management teams to provide solutions and feedback as appropriate;

  • Ongoing review of fellow team member’s work product to support the highest standard of quality assurance -ensuring our EMPI foundational support of patient safety, as well as maintaining team QA statistics;

  • Influence and collaboration with Teams

  • Provide hands-on expertise to CHI Revenue Cycle and its partners.

  • Improve team performance by providing feedback, initiating peer support, and assisting in obstacle avoidance.

  • Assume role as a change agent, handling assigned work and creating process methodologies, tools and techniques.

  • Facilitate relationships and break down barriers in conjunction with CHI, MBO, IT, BI preferred vendors, and Conifer.

  • Track quantitative and qualitative measures tied to goals to meet objectives

  • Act as team liaison to MBO when initiating ‘Duplicate Clean-up Projects’ working closely with EMPI Architect/Tech Analyst/App Analysts to ensure accuracy of system/processes as necessary, providing in-service training for existing staff as required;

  • Perform electronic health record merges utilizing administrative access to the database server/ambulatory merge tool ensuring un-interrupted interface connectivity;

  • Recognize potential standardization/procedural process flaws, recommending solutions to streamline effective Data Stewardship work;

  • Work in tandem with team members by participating in a 24/7 on-call support coverage rotation to manage overlays/merges necessary for seamless patient care and reduce patient safety risks;

  • Maintain and protect confidentiality of patient information as well as position-acquired information.

Education / Accreditation / Licensure:

  • A high school diploma or GED equivalent is required.

  • Associates degree or higher preferred.

  • Revenue Cycle or HIM EMR Certification as applicable


  • At least 3 years’ experience in the patient registration software and/or electronic health record systems or the business areas of healthcare.

  • Ability to work and communicate effectively with internal and external stakeholders.

  • Proficient in Master Patient Index operations and multiple registration/electronic health record source systems.

  • Demonstrated ability to accept increasing responsibilities and understanding healthcare systems preferred.

  • Ability to analyze patient data and make informed decisions.

  • Profound attention to detail and adherence to departmental protocols.

  • Knowledge of general MS Office programs, e.g. Excel, Access, Word, PowerPoint.

  • Ability to work autonomously as well as part of a team with minimal supervision.
