Annual Salary Range: $88,800 - $159,700

Offers will typically be made in the bottom half of the listed range. NREL takes into consideration a candidate’s education, training, and experience, as well as the position's work location, expected quality and quantity of work, required travel (if any), external market and internal value, including seniority and merit systems, and internal pay alignment when determining the salary level for potential new employees. Job Description

The ITS Platform Engineering team is seeking a Linux systems engineer to design, develop, deploy, and manage solutions at the laboratory. The role includes responsibility for architecting solutions that meet the availability, performance, and security needs of the laboratory. The candidate should be adept at working as part of a team and should demonstrate a willingness to contribute wherever they can make a positive impact. The candidate needs to be prepared to interpret and understand federal security regulations and requirements and translate them into practical implementations.

The Platform Engineering team includes cloud, Windows, and Linux systems engineers that collaborate on projects as well as branching out independently to design solutions. Members of the Platform Engineering team are expected to contribute ideas for new directions and technology, identify areas to improve service delivery, and take responsibility for securing systems and data. Team members are expected to use established processes for tracking projects and work. The team provides tier 3 support as necessary for other teams that handle routine operations. Remote work opportunities, flexible schedules, and career development activities are available and encouraged for members on the Platform Engineering team.


Basic Qualifications

Related Bachelor's Degree and 9 or more years of experience or equivalent related education/experience.

Or, related Master's Degree and 7 or more years of experience or equivalent related education/experience.

Or, related PhD and 4 or more years of experience or equivalent related education/experience.


Additional Required Qualifications

  • Must be able to obtain an HSPD-12 badge/credential

  • Experience with mainstream Linux distributions in an enterprise environment

  • Experience architecting, installing, upgrading, managing, supporting, and troubleshooting Linux servers

  • Expertise in developing code for the automation of tasks, reporting, configuration, and management of Linux servers

  • Experience establishing and managing configurations for Linux distributions

  • Understanding of deploying updates and changing system configurations to assist the Vulnerability Remediation Team in mitigating risks from vulnerabilities on Linux servers

  • Familiarity with managing infrastructure built in a VMware environment (ESXi)

  • Knowledge of private and public cloud infrastructure fundamentals

  • Awareness of cyber security best practices for Linux

  • History of evaluating and implementing new technologies

Preferred Qualifications

Enterprise experience with:

  • SLES 12

  • SUSE Manager

  • Kubernetes/Rancher

  • Ansible

  • Jenkins

  • VMware

  • Managing production, test and development environments

  • Running workloads in AWS and Azure
