Job Description

The National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL), located at the foothills of the Rocky Mountains in Golden, Colorado is the nation’s primary laboratory for research and development of renewable energy and energy efficiency technologies.

A Staff Scientist (Researcher III) position is available in the Process Science and Engineering (PS&E) Group of the Materials, Chemical, and Computational Sciences Directorate to lead research efforts on processing and manufacturing science. The PS&E group currently has efforts focused on processing, coating, defect inspection, and other aspects manufacturing science focused on fuel cells and electrolyzers. There is a desire to expand these efforts to new technologies or introduce new expertise to existing projects that would expand capabilities and research areas. Candidates who are interested in launching independent careers with the desire to build programs to advance understanding of process science and engineering as a principal investigator should apply.

The Staff Scientist will be engaged in large collaborative efforts which explore various aspects of developing scalable (roll-to-roll) manufacturing processes for renewable energy and energy efficient technologies. These larger efforts probe the effects of manufacturing process steps such as materials processing, coating, and drying on film morphology and functional properties, with a focus on developing low cost, high-performance materials and devices and reducing manufacturing costs and energy intensity.

Experience working with roll-to-roll coating (e.g. slot die, gravure, slide die), including multilayer coating, and drying methods, colloid science, or rheology. Experience with technologies of interest to the Department of Energy and NREL including, but not limited to, batteries, photovoltaics, or separations membranes.

Experience with nano or micro-scale printing or patterning process technologies. Experience with writing or significantly contributing to proposals for funding, especially related to the Department of Energy.

Record of publications/presentations in areas of relevance to the position and/or proposed research.

Qualified candidates must demonstrate considerable skill in interpreting and assessing the experimental results of their own work and that of others and have a demonstrated record of success from graduate and/or post-graduate work.

Scientist will need to partner and team internally and externally by leveraging existing and building new science and engineering networks. Basic Qualifications

PhD in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Material Science, Mechanical Engineering or related. Or, Master's Degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, Mechanical Engineering or related and 3 or more years of experience . Or, Bachelor's Degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Material Science, Mechanical Engineering or related and 5 or more years of experience .

Additional Required Qualifications

  • Demonstrates complete understanding and wide application of scientific technical procedures, principles, theories and concepts in the field.

  • General knowledge of other related disciplines.

  • Demonstrates leadership in one or more areas of team, task or project lead responsibilities.

  • Demonstrated experience in management of projects.

  • Very good technical writing.

  • Excellent interpersonal, oral and written communication skills are essential for success in this role.

Annual Salary Range (based on full-time 40 hours per week)

Annual Salary Range: $73,900 - $133,100

Offers will typically be made in the bottom half of the listed range. NREL takes into consideration a candidate’s education, training, and experience, as well as the position's work location, expected quality and quantity of work, required travel (if any), external market and internal value, including seniority and merit systems, and internal pay alignment when determining the salary level for potential new employees. In compliance with the Colorado Equal Pay for Equal Work Act, a potential new employee’s salary history will not be used in compensation decisions.
