Job Summary

Lead transportation data and analysis projects at NREL, including both performing work directly and delegating tasks to junior staff. Activities will include managing large travel activity databases and leveraging these in conjunction with external data sources to analyze how new transportation options impact mobility quality and energy efficiency. Examples of such new transportation options include connected and automated vehicle technologies, transportation network companies and mobility as a service/mobility on demand concepts. Additional specific activities may include:

  • Interfacing with agencies such as metropolitan planning organizations (MPOs), state departments of transportation (DOTs) and U.S. DOT to identify datasets for inclusion in NREL’s Transportation Secure Data Center. Supporting growth of internal and external researcher use of these data in addition to on-going growth of the database and data types included.

  • Apply modeling, simulation, analysis and visualization techniques to transportation research projects, and translate results into effective tools and influential communication products tailored to client requests and audience requirements.

  • Interface with project sponsors and support development of research proposals.

  • Strong collaboration skills: thrive working in a collaborative team environment but comfortable working independently when necessary.

  • Degrees/backgrounds of particular interest: civil engineering, transportation engineering, data science, computer science, urban planning, geography, statistics, public policy, and behavioral science.

Required Education, Experience, and Skills

Job Profile Summary

Relevant PhD . Or, relevant Master's Degree and 3 or more years of experience . Or, relevant Bachelor's Degree and 5 or more years of experience . Demonstrates broad understanding and wide application of engineering technical procedures, principles, theories and concepts in the field. General knowledge of other related disciplines. Demonstrates leadership in one or more areas of team, task or project lead responsibilities. Demonstrated experience in management of projects. Very good writing, interpersonal and communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications

The ideal candidate would possess at least some of the following preferred qualifications:

  • Strong writing and communication skills.

  • Experience working with large databases and/or data centers, including archive and/or real-time processing.

  • Familiarity with transportation data, such as travel activity data, traffic data/probe vehicle data, incident data, travel survey methods, statistical analysis and data expansion techniques, land-use data, connected/automated vehicle and infrastructure data.

  • Expertise with transportation modeling, such as multi-resolution transportation network traffic models, the four-step modeling process, and/or activity-based trip generation models.

  • Familiarity with programming languages, database tools, GIS software programs and data visualization tools.

  • Established base of contacts in the transportation survey, data, planning, modeling and analysis communities.

  • Familiarity with behavior/choice modeling, including logit modeling, regression discontinuity, difference-in-difference methods, instrumental variables and/or other econometric techniques.
