Managed Business Solutions Summer 2021 Dam Safety & Communication Specialist Intern in Lakewood, Colorado

Promote safety programs across tribal lands as the Dam Safety & Communication Specialist Intern. As part of Sealaska’s Managed Business Solutions (MBS) team, you will learn about dam safety systems and emergency management communications. Coordinate with MBS and tribal staff across the country to update communications directories, post accurate information on websites, or assist with database management.

Throughout the summer, you may have the opportunity to visit Native American reservations in the Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA) dam safety program. During these site visits, you can experience how the monitoring equipment is implemented in the field.

If you have an engineering background, the team can provide technical projects appropriate to your background.

This internship will be located at the BIA Office of Trust Services in Lakewood, CO. The intern may travel with MBS staff to one or more sites within the BIA dam safety program.

  • Learn about and understand dam safety monitoring systems

  • Assist with the updating and maintenance of emergency management communication information regarding dam safety

  • Assist with the update of communications directories

  • Assist with the reporting and posting of accurate safety information on websites

  • Assist with data entry and quality control

  • Visit and collaborate with local staff at BIA program dams

  • Strong communication skills and dedication to accuracy

  • Familiarity with basic data entry and Excel spreadsheets

  • Sealaska shareholder, descendant of a shareholder, or spouse of a shareholder

  • At least 18 years of age by start date

  • At least a 2.5 GPA

  • Must be currently enrolled in college or a vocational-technical school or a recent graduate (1-2 years) and have completed one year of school by the start date

  • Legally authorized to work in the United States

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Interest in water resources, environmental sciences, dam safety, civil engineering, and/or web development

  • Major/minor in engineering, computer science, physical sciences, mathematics, or communications

  • Familiarity with HTML, SQL, VBA, and/or Python

  • Strong critical thinking and research skills

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills

  • Able to both collaborate with a team and work independently

  • Self-starter with ability to adapt to a fast-paced work environment

  • Ability to travel, as needed

  • Work Environment: While performing the duties of this job, the employee will primarily work in an office setting. The noise level in the work environment is usually minimal. Frequent and extended periods in outdoor settings sometimes with uneven terrain. Daily hiking distances may sometimes be in excess of three miles total.
